Teenager, 19, is arrested on suspicion of the murder of 18-year-old boy who vanished after calling his family to say he was on his way home from Bank Holiday night out

  • It is thought he met with a friend in evening before going their separate ways
  • Neither returned home and Sussex Police have now launched an urgent search
  • Police say they have now arrested a 19-year-old on suspicion of Marc’s murder 

A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a teenager vanished while on his way home from a Bank Holiday weekend night out.

Marc Williams, 18, from Uckfield, East Sussex, went to the Maresfield area on Saturday but has not been seen since he contacted his family to say he was on his way home.

Sussex Police at first launched a missing persons appeal for Marc and for a 19-year-old.

But they now say they believe Marc may have been killed.

A force spokesman said: ‘Marc went to the Maresfield area on Saturday evening.

‘He called his family about 11.30pm to say he was on his way home but never returned. Sadly, detectives now believe Marc may have come to harm.

‘A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of his murder at a property in Eastbourne on Tuesday (1 June). The suspect remains in custody for questioning.’

Detective Chief Inspector Alasdair Henry said: ‘Sadly, we are now treating the disappearance of Marc Williams as a criminal investigation and a suspect has been arrested on suspicion of his murder.

‘Finding Marc remains our priority and we continue to appeal to the public with any information to please come forward and report it to us.

‘Our thoughts are with Marc’s family at this incredibly difficult time and they are being supported by specially trained officers.

‘This investigation is a dynamic and fast-moving inquiry and our officers are working around the clock to establish the circumstances of this incident.

‘We thank the public for their patience as we continue to carry out our work in the area.

‘This incident is being treated as isolated and there is nothing to suggest any threat to the wider community.’

He called his family at around 11.30pm to let them know he was on his way home but never returned.

The 19-year-old friend was last seen in Crowborough around 11am on Sunday morning but he has not returned home since.

Officers are now carrying out house-to-house enquiries, CCTV checks and local area searches as they work to establish their movements.

Marc is white, 5ft 10ins, of slim build and with short blond hair. He was wearing a black T-shirt, trousers, walking trainers and carrying a black backpack.

It is believed he may have had a hoodie attached to his backpack and a green mountain bike with him.
