Sao Paulo confirm they have parted company with Dani Alves following pay dispute

Sao Paulo confirm they have parted company with Dani Alves following pay dispute with veteran full-back claiming ‘he is owed £2.6MILLION in unpaid wages’

  • Dani Alves arrived at Sao Paulo in the summer of 2019 after 17 years in Europe
  • However, his time back in Brazil has turned sour over the contract dispute
  • Sao Paulo have said all debts have been repaid – although some were paid late
  • Alves’ days were numbered when he was frozen out of the squad last week

Sao Paulo have announced that Dani Alves’ contract has been terminated over a bitter wage row.

The 38-year-old returned to his homeland in the summer of 2019 on a contract until December 2022 after 17 years playing in Europe, but it was claimed things came to a head earlier this week as the former Barcelona right back had not been paid in full in both the past two seasons and was still owed a whopping €3million (£2.6m).

The Brazilian club have said that while some payments were made late, the debts have now been settled in full and they have now got Alves off their books, with the former Barcelona and Juventus right back now linked with moves to Boca Juniors, River Plate, the MLS and the Middle East.

Speaking in March, the club’s football director Carlos Belmonte said the Covid-19 pandemic had contributed to the situation.

‘Of course, we have this situation to resolve – which is still open – to reconstruct the financial issue. If we can do this, Daniel stays,’ he explained.

‘We had a long conversation with Daniel and he always demonstrates the real desire to continue in Sao Paulo. He is a professional above all, absolutely committed. This I can guarantee you.’

However, as the situation escalated, Belmonte said last week that Alves was no longer eligible for selection.

‘We were told by his representatives that Daniel Alves will not come back to Sao Paulo until there is an adjustment in the financial debt that Sao Paulo has with the player.

‘Sao Paulo recognises that debt and last week we made a proposal to try and right it. The proposal was not accepted by the player’s representatives.

‘We have taken the decision and told this to coach Hernan Crespo that Dani Alves will no longer be at his disposal to play for Sao Paulo.

‘We all work for this institution. Nobody is bigger than Sao Paulo Football Club.’

After captaining Brazil to Olympic glory in the summer to became the most decorated player of all time with 43 trophies to his name, Alves – who scored 10 goals in 95 games for Sao Paulo – still harbours hopes of being part of Tite’s 2022 World Cup squad.
