England star Kalvin Phillips has revealed which iconic player he would have loved to feature alongside – and picked Barcelona icon Ronaldinho.

The Leeds United midfielder, who enjoyed a memorable run with the Three Lions to the Euro 2020 final this summer, said the legendary Brazilian was his choice because he always looked happy when playing the game as he strutted his stuff with incredible skills and talent during his career with PSG, Barca and AC Milan.

Speaking to promote McDonald’s Fun Football programme, the 25-year-old was asked questions by YouTuber Tekkerz Kid, who quizzed him about a player from the past who would be his dream team-mate.

‘Ronaldinho,’ Phillips said. ‘He was an exceptional player but I would want to play with him because every time he went out on the pitch he enjoyed himself, he smiled, he had a laugh and he loved to showboat too – which obviously I can’t do!’

Ronaldinho enjoyed a hugely successful career, winning the World Cup with Brazil in 2002, two LaLiga titles and the Champions League with Barcelona, as well as the Ballon D’or prize in 2005.

Phillips – often seen smiling himself during training and matches for club and country – is one of the first names on the team sheet for Marcelo Bielsa’s men and played a pivotal role in helping them secure promotion back to the top flight, as well as cementing their status in the Premier League.

Reflecting back on his favourite memories in his career so far, Phillips recalled his quick start to life at Elland Road and ending their 16-year wait to return to England’s top division, as well as the priceless moment he received his first call up to Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad.

‘Scoring in my first-ever game for Leeds at home, winning the Championship and getting called up to England,’ he added.

‘It was unbelievable, I was ecstatic as soon as I put the phone down, I was screaming at the top of my voice while I was on the way to training in my car.’
