Harry Kane ‘will smash Alan Shearer’s record’ for most goals, claims Thierry Henry… with Arsenal legend also insisting the Tottenham hitman is one of the best natural finishers the Premier League has ever seen

  • Alan Sherer has the Premier League record for most goals with 260
  • But Thierry Henry believes Harry Kane, currently on 166, will beat the record
  • Arsenal legend also lauded the finishing ability of the Tottenham striker
  • Henry also welcomed the prospect of France recalling Karim Benzema

Thierry Henry has backed Harry Kane to usurp Alan Shearer as the greatest goal scorer in Premier League history providing he stays in England.

Shearer’s record stands at 260 having rattled in goals for Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers before his retirement in 2006, with Kane currently on 166 with Spurs.

However, Kane’s future in north London is uncertain after the 27-year-old requested for a summer transfer away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which could yet see the England captain move abroad.

Kane’s 23 goals for Spurs this term saw him finish the Premier League campaign as top scorer for a third time.

When asked on if Kane was one of the best natural finishers ever in the Premier League, Henry who scored 175 Premier League goals for Tottenham’s arch rivals Arsenal, agreed with the notion before backing him to eclipse Shearer.

‘I’ll go down with that,’ Henry told UMM. ‘People thought he was going to be a one-season wonder. Then they were like let’s see if he’s going to do it for two years. Then he did it for two years. ‘Now let’s see if he can do it for England’ – listen, now nobody can talk about that anymore.’

‘I said so many times, I think I said it four years ago – he will smash Alan Shearer’s record if he stays in England. That is if he stays in England because he’s that good. Now he has to do it. Because obviously it’s easy to say – but the record of the big man is really high.’

Meanwhile Henry was also quizzed on his thoughts regarding the French national team heading into Euro 2020.

Henry won the World Cup in 1998 and Euro 2000 while representing Les Bleus and is confident his country can pull off the double again after recalling Karim Benzema from a six-year international exile.

The 43-year-old is convinced France are bringing one of the world’s best strikers into a side who are looking to go one better than their last European Championship appearance when they were beaten by Portugal on home soil in the final in 2016.

‘You have to respect what was happening. But all I care about now is Benzema is back’, he added.

‘When you think about it, you find yourself in a situation where you are world champion, you managed to do it without Benzema. And you can actually bring him back, not because you’re struggling – just because you can.

‘It’s crazy when you think about it. You’re bringing back in the national team one of the best strikers in the world.’
